Learning outcomes

Children

4

Understanding shape

- develop an awareness of  shapes

P1(i)  encounter activities

P1(ii) give intermittent reactions

P2(i) show interest in objects

P2(ii)cooperate in shared exploration

P3(i) sustain concentration for short periods

P3(ii) actively explore shapes

P4 recognise the relationship between objects

P5 search intentionally for objects in their usual place

P6 manipulate 3 dimensional shapes

P7 start to pick out named shapes from a collection

P8 use mathematical vocabulary to describe shapes

Feeling, naming, describing shapes – 2D and 3D shapes

Posting shapes

Matching and sorting shapes

Textured shapes - shapes covered with different textures – sandpaper, bubble wrap, shiny paper, velvet etc.

Make pictures out of 2D shapes.

Features of shapes – flat edges, pointed, with holes, circles etc

Finding foods that are specific shapes

Making a 3D shape from a 2D shape

Finding hidden shapes

Using shapes to make a pattern

Make junk models using 3D shapes

P1(i)  are helped to explore varied 2D and 3D shapes

P1(ii) smile or grimace when moved on the big ball

P2(i) look inside the box when the paper comes off – takes the ball

P2(ii)with adult handle and feel 2D and 3D shapes

P3(i) watch for a short period as the shapes roll / do not roll

P3(ii) manipulate the stack of shapes until they fall

P4 build  a junk model putting 3D shapes on top of each other

P5 will look for boxes of shapes in their usual cupboard

P6 make a sphere roll, try to roll a cube

P7 can give the names of 2D common shapes – circle, square – by word, sign, symbol

P8 will describe a shape by circle, straight, corner

Resources:

Mystery bag, a variety of 2D shapes – different sizes, colours, thicknesses, variety of 3D shapes, feely bag, Shape song, shapes, matching shapes, Logiblock shapes, examples of pictures, big ball, small balls, posting boxes,  junk 3D shapes, sensory objects, beads, shaving foam, sand  biscuits of different shapes, symbols of ‘shape’ foods,

(click on words underlined to go to that resource or lesson plan)

Points to note:

Performance descriptions from P4 – P8  are from ‘shape space and measures’

Plenary

Understanding of shape, space and measure -

develop an awareness of

Mon

Have a variety of flat shapes– children to feel /name. How many sides, what is same /different etc

Use the Mystery bag song for children to pick out shape and say what it is and any description they can give

1 – wrap cube box in textured / shiny paper, children to feel all round, unwrap, find ball, feel

2- post shapes into boxes.

3 – match 2 and 3D shapes, talk about names and properties of both

Use an assortment of 3D shapes - which can roll, which do not.

shapes

Tues

Show a flat or solid shape, children to find one that is the same shape – can be bigger, different colour etc.

Sing the shape song and have the shapes ready for children to choose. Make up different things for the different shapes

1 –build up towers of 3D cubes – knock down after 1,2,3, anticipation / children to knock down

2 – match the pictures of the shapes (resources – cut out one set to put on top of other) or use logiblock shapes

3 – make a picture using flat shapes (see examples)

Look at symbols and think of different foods that come in the different flat or solid shapes. Show and taste

if appropriate

Resources are shown in the medium term planning week 4

Wed

Have flat shapes in feely bag, shapes corresponding on table, describe shape –choose shape from table

Make a big circle and go round, change to a square, child to say / choose a shape, change to that shape

1 –  use big balls to be moved on, feel small balls – use the ball pool in soft play

2 – match flat ended shapes as in dominoes

3 – have a set of shapes – sort into triangle/ not a triangle, circle/not a circle etc.

Sing the Shape Song and find different objects for the shapes named

Thurs

Mystery bag song using 3D shapes- pick out shape and say what it is or describe it

Show a cylinder and cone shape – take rectangle and make cylinder, take circle and make cone –children have help to make one

1 –feel and roll variety of cylinders and cones – cylinder rolls forward, cones round and round

2 sort all the shapes – give a e.g. big square / a red triangle etc. in order of size

3- make own cones and cylinders of different sizes

Find things in the classroom that are cylinder shapes

Fri

Have a variety of shapes out on table. Children to give in turn the one you describe

A selection of cylinders, cubes, spheres, put them all in order of size – smallest to biggest

1 – find shapes hidden in shaving foam / sand etc.

2 – use threading beads of different shapes to thread as a simple pattern

3 – make junk models using solid shapes

Have different shaped biscuits in a box, children to pick out a biscuit, say its name and eat it!
