Key Stage 1 Planning Sheet         Week 3                Date:

Subject:  Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning          Theme: - New Beginnings

Pupil Grouping(s), differentiation and support:

Objective:

To appreciate and celebrate differences and similarities

Intended Outcomes: Children will

  • recognise differences and similarities in sounds

  • make similar and different sounds

Language used:

Same, different, listen, feelings

Lesson Plan:

·        Explain that we are going to find out about things that are the same/different starting with ourselves and go onto sounds. What is different and the same about the children in the class

·        Children take turns to make a sound – using vocalisation or body parts- not objects at this stage – are the sounds the same / different – copy the sounds that other children / adults make

·        Sit quietly and listen to sounds in the classroom – then talk about what can be heard. What sounds are there – are they in the classroom / outside the room / are they loud / quiet, are they now and then or all the time

·        Watch the PowerPoint presentation of sounds – guess the sounds before the picture comes in

·        Listen to pieces of music that uses sound in different ways e.g. Lullaby – makes you sleepy,  The sorcerers apprentice - by Dukas – scary, The Entertainer –Scott Joplin – happy, Offenbach, the can- can – excited

·        Do the children feel / react in the same way to each piece – sometimes the volume may be turned up / down for extra effect.

·        Choose pictures from the photos of children to match the type of music.

·        Sing the song ‘ I can play on the big bass drum but use the words I can make a sound with my ……. (part of body or musical instrument) – take turns to make a sound.

·        Can anyone make a different sound with the same part of body / instrument?

·        Look at the Story of The Creation and use sounds to accompany each slide – use the pictures from the presentation or from the book made in a previous session.

·        Decide who is going to make which sounds as the presentation is played again and go through the story again

·        Play the Music of The Creation by Haydn to finish the session
