Objective:

To find out about one way that Mardi Gras is celebrated

Intended Outcomes:  Children will:

  • hear how Mardi Gras is celebrated in America

  • celebrate Mardi Gras in the fashion of the Americans

Language used:

Celebration, festivals, mardi gras,  carnival, giving,

Lesson Plan:

  • Talk to the children about special times that we celebrate. Can they give you ant specific celebrations e.g. birthday, weddings, Christmas etc?

  • Explain to the children that a special celebration called Mardi Gras (translated from French as Fat Tuesday) or Shrove Tuesday is celebrated differently in different places in the world. This actually takes place in February but if this is not done in that month, this can be explained to the children. It happens the day before Lent when people are supposed to give up eating something for forty days until it is Easter

  • Explain that in New Orleans, a place in America, used to be very rich and on this day they would give money and jewels to the poor people of the town. Today the Mardi Gras is a very spectacular carnival which features samba music, elaborate costumes made with feathers and sequins etc., and lots of dancing.

  • Show the picture of the lorry and all the people in the street.

  • Make a headdress using card. Measure the child’s head and cut out a pattern at the top. Decorate it with sequins, feathers, shredded tissue paper etc.

  • When they have finished their head dresses, let them wear them and play some samba music so that the children can dance – some may prefer to play the instruments to the music.

  • Have some party food nibbles at the end of the session.
